This mandarinfish is almost certainly a male. The males have brighter colors and larger fins than females, and an especially elongated first spine on the forward or spinous dorsal fin. I don't know exactly why this one had its spinous dorsal fin displayed-- perhaps a warning posture, or maybe it thought I was another mandarinfish!
